OUTLOOK
Magallanes is emerging as a strategic hub for renewable energy and green hydrogen production, leveraging vast wind resources and favorable geography. Chile’s renewable mix—60% solar and 40% wind—aims to position the country as a global leader in exports and domestic applications, projected to exceed $30 billion USD.
Chile has set ambitious production targets of 126 GW (up from 4.3 GW in 2023), with an early growth rate of 30% CAGR. The Magallanes region, accounting for approximately 40% of the country’s wind energy potential, is positioned as a key contributor to this expansion. Nationwide, this growth is projected to create 38,000 jobs by 2030 and 570,000 jobs by 2050. For the Magallanes region, this translates to approximately 15,200 jobs by 2030 and 228,000 jobs by 2050, driving demand for bilingual engineers and technicians to support training, research, and commercialization efforts.
Several large-scale projects are already advancing in Magallanes, reinforcing its role as a clean-energy hub:
H2 Magallanes (TotalEnergies): Up to 10 GW wind and 8 GW electrolysis, targeting green ammonia exports.
HNH Energy Project: 1.7 GW wind farm, producing 1M tonnes of green ammonia annually.
Faro del Sur (HIF/ENEL): USD 500M, 0.3 GW wind, focusing on e-methanol—already exporting to Europe.
Vientos Magallánicos (RWE): Planned 1 GW wind capacity in Laguna Blanca.
Additional Projects: Gente Grande (TEG) in Tierra del Fuego and ENAP’s project in Cabo Negro.
Magallanes is projected to grow fourfold in the coming years, driving demand for logistics, infrastructure, and services to support this expansion. The region is already laying the groundwork to import wind turbines and address domestic needs for electro-mobility, data centers, and industrial infrastructure with major projects focused on port development—key priorities outlined by the Regional Government. While also highlighting the need for hospitality infrastructure to support professionals and tourism. This rapid growth presents a call to action for local players and universities to actively shape the region’s future.
